Denmark applauds significant ramp up of the EU’s 2030 climate target
11.12.2020 09:37:47 CET | Klima-, Energi- og Forsyningsministeriet | Press release
The decision reflects a commitment to climate action that Denmark has been working relentlessly towards in close cooperation with other ambitious member states.
“With this decision, we are witnessing a significant step up in the EU’s climate ambitions. The previous target has long been a far cry from the demands of science and while Denmark would have welcomed an even stronger target, we can be proud of an unanimous decision to make such a significant leap in ambition”, says the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen.
The Paris Agreement requires all countries to revisit climate targets in 2020, and with this decision the EU is poised to honor that commitment. In the midst of an unprecedented health crisis and with the postponement of COP26, it represents a much needed boost to climate momentum globally.
“As temperature records are breaking and climate impacts felt around the globe, the EU now walks the talk and leads by example. This will strengthen our global climate diplomacy efforts and lend credence to efforts to persuade other major emitters to follow suit and ramp up their level of ambition as well. With the 5-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement this Saturday, this is a fitting tribute”, says the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen.
