Bella Center Copenhagen leads the way in responsible event hosting with new climate reporting initiative
Bella Center Copenhagen, Scandinavia’s leading international congress and exhibition venue, announces the launch of an ambitious climate reporting initiative, setting a new standard for sustainability in the global events industry.
As of January 2024, Bella Center Copenhagen has provided clients and event organizers with comprehensive climate impact reports for all large events hosted within its renowned halls in the Danish capital. This initiative is a significant stride on the venue's responsible hospitality journey, emphasizing continuous learning and collaboration with clients to evolve sustainable practices.
Bella Center Copenhagen's climate reporting initiative represents a proactive and responsible approach to the environmental and climate impact of event hosting. By offering climate impact reports free of charge – not as a paid add-on but a given standard for all large events - the venue aims to pioneer sustainability efforts within the global venue scene.
What the pioneering initiative entails
The climate impact reports provided by Bella Center Copenhagen are designed to engage clients in the venue's sustainability journey through fact-based knowledge sharing. The reports offer a transparent disclosure of both the venue's and clients' scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, following the reporting principles of the GHG (greenhouse gas) protocol. The comprehensive reports provide a holistic overview of the environmental impact of a specific event, encompassing energy usage, waste management, purchased goods and services, food and beverage choices, and upstream transportation.
This pioneering approach ensures that clients receive tangible data output for consideration, fostering a deeper understanding of the environmental footprint associated with the setup and execution of their events.
Frida Ulrik-Petersen, Director of Responsible Hospitality at parent company Bellagroup, states:
"This initiative embodies Bella Center Copenhagen's operationally founded commitment to responsible hospitality. Beyond mere data, it reflects our vision for hosting events in ways that take the surrounding environment into account. Climate impact reporting on events will be an important tool on our path towards becoming net zero by 2050. We cannot achieve this endeavor as a venue alone, as true change will only arise from the ongoing dialogue with the clients and events filling our halls.”
Gemma Strutt, Director of Congress & Large Events at Bella Center Copenhagen, states:
"Our new climate reporting initiative aligns seamlessly with our commercial objectives, setting a new standard for responsible event management. By offering transparent insights into all major events taking place at our premises, we aim to make a positive impact and inspire clients, employees, and the community alike. The next step will be defining one consistent method of measuring and benchmarking event climate impact across our industry. But we need to get started now.”
Facts:
- Bella Center Copenhagen now provides individual climate impact reports for all large-scale events taking place in one or more of the congress halls.
- The initiative is a new standard offering and is therefore provided free of charge.
- The climate impact reports cover both Bella Center Copenhagen's and the customer's scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, including energy consumption, waste management, purchased goods and services, food and beverage choices, and upstream transportation. The reports are prepared using the ESG software CEMAsys and follow the reporting principles of the GHG Protocol.
- In the report, the event's emissions are broken down into the following areas: Total Climate footprint, climate footprint per unique visitor, climate footprint per participant, and climate footprint per m².
- In connection with a double certification earlier this year, both the parent company Bellagroup and Bella Center Copenhagen follow the ISO standards 14001 and 20121 for environmental management and sustainable events.
