On Sunday, April 27, Ukraine House in Denmark had the honour of hosting a discussion dedicated to the legacy and present-day relevance of the Chornobyl disaster. We were privileged to welcome Professor Serhii Plokhii, Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University and a globally recognized authority on nuclear catastrophes. Professor Plokhii, who joined us at the opening of Ukraine House, opened by reminding us that “authoritarian regimes are there to create disasters—small disasters and big disasters—and Chornobyl is about a big disaster that can destroy life on Earth.” He went on to draw a chilling parallel between 1986 and 2022: “The most disturbing part of that new Chornobyl crisis that emerged in 2022 was that it was caused by the very same phenomenon—the authoritarian regime that has complete disregard for norms of international law, for human life, for environmental concerns.”

On April 25, Ukraine House in Denmark hosted the second edition of the Forum “Decolonizing Mindsets for Security in Europe,” convening leading cultural and political thinkers to examine how colonial legacies shape memory, policy, and Europe’s security landscape. “At a time when cultural policy, memory, and history shape the global struggle for freedom and democracy, it's vital to reflect critically on the narratives that define how we see the US, Europe, Ukraine, and Russia. For Ukrainians, decolonisation means uncovering layers of russification and reclaiming our history, culture, and decision-making free from Russian-centric optics. But Ukraine’s security also depends on the willingness of democratic allies to emancipate themselves from cultural superpower biases—to recognise Ukrainian contributions to world heritage and engage with Ukraine as an equal partner in defending dignity and democracy. As Russia’s war enters its third year, the question isn’t whether Ukraine will endure—but whether justice will. On April 9, Ukraine House in Denmark, in partnership with the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, convened a public discussion, “Establishing Accountability for Russia’s Actions in Ukraine”, with a sharp focus: how the world can make Russia pay—literally and legally—for its aggression. Featuring Jonas Parello-Plesner, Executive Director of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, and Julia Kyrpa, Board Member of the Register of Damage for Ukraine (RD4U), the conversation illuminated a fast-moving and historic effort: building an international compensation system without Russia’s consent.

The "Voices of Dignity: Defending Ukraine" event, co-organized by Ukraine House in Denmark and the Danish Cultural Institute, united Ukrainian and Danish voices in solidarity, reaffirming the resilience of Ukraine’s people and culture.

Ukraine House in Denmark and the Danish Cultural Institute announce their third commemorative event "Voices of Dignity: Defending Ukraine," bringing together Ukrainian and Danish poets, musicians, soldiers, and opinion leaders to mark the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. Set for February 24, 2025, at Ukraine House in Denmark, this event continues its mission of amplifying Ukrainian voices that remain dignified and resilient in the face of unimaginable horror. The evening will feature extraordinary testimonies from those who have experienced the war firsthand.

Copenhagen, 2025 – The Ukraine House in Denmark, in collaboration with the Dutch-Ukrainian Cultural Center “Kastanje” and Ukrainian artist and photographer Kostyantyn Rudeshko, proudly presents The House of Light: A Tribute to Polina Raiko, an outdoor multichannel video installation and exhibition honoring the legacy of the self-taught Ukrainian artist Polina Raiko. The event marks Ukraine’s debut at the Copenhagen Light Festival 2025 and runs from January 31 to February 28.

Copenhagen, January 2025 — Ukraine House in Denmark announces the final event of its exhibition "Malanka: The Dance of Death and Life" featuring distinguished folklorist and costume designer Mariia Kvitka. The closing presentation, "Malanka: Traditions in Contemporary Ukrainian Cinema," will take place on January 25 at 16:00, offering a unique exploration of traditional Ukrainian culture through the lens of modern filmmaking.

"This concentration camp is Russia in miniature, and it will come to everyone in Europe if Ukraine falls." With this chilling warning, Stanislav Aseyev, a Ukrainian journalist and survivor of 962 days in the Russian Izolyatsia prison, set the tone for a discussion at Ukraine House in Denmark. On January 16th, two extraordinary human rights activists from Ukraine - Stanislav Aseyev and Olha Skrypnyk - shared their experiences of life under Russian aggression. Aseyev, known for his book "The Torture Camp on Paradise Street," described Izolyatsia as a place where brutality defies logic. "It's a 24/7 concentration torture camp," he explained, detailing how prisoners endured constant fear, were forced to wear garbage bags over their heads, remained under glaring lights, and were subjected to electrocution and other forms of torture. Copenhagen, Denmark – On October 29, 2024 Ukraine House in Denmark and the Embassy of Ukraine in Denmark hosted a critical event to spotlight the far-reaching consequences of Russia's war on Ukraine’s agriculture and its effects on global food stability. This event brought together leading experts to discuss economic, ecological, and logistical challenges, highlighting Ukraine’s essential role in international food security and the collaborative efforts needed to restore its agricultural sector. The discussion is a part of the “Heart of Earth” exhibition program and is supported Izolyatsia foundation, Trans Europe Halles and Maly Berlin and co-financed by the #ZMINA_Rebuilding program, created with the support of the European Union in Ukraine under a dedicated call for proposals to support Ukrainian displaced people and the Ukrainian Cultural and Creative Sectors.

This December, explore the rich heritage of Ukraine’s Christmas through exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and films that celebrate its timeless traditions.

Ukraine House in Denmark will launch its Christmas program with the opening of the spectacular exhibition Malanka: the Dance of Death and Life. The exhibition explores the vibrant Malanka carnival, an ancient New Year’s Eve celebration with roots in Slavic mythology and agrarian customs, and its contemporary portrayal in the critically acclaimed Ukrainian film Pamfir (2022), by Dmytro Sykholytkyy-Sobchuk, produced by Oleksandra Kostina & Jane Yatsuta (Bosonfilm). Featuring more than 30 costumes and over 80 masks from the film, as well as film props, sketches, storyboards, photographs and video footage, the exhibition will immerse audiences in the colorful and symbolic world of Malanka, which is traditionally celebrated with elaborate costumed processions, dancing and singing.
