Fylde MP Supports Westinghouse on UK SMR Offering
Westinghouse Electric Company today engaged its U.K. stakeholders on the company’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) offering to the U.K. Government, along with the findings of the recent Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) advanced manufacturing study. The company hosted the independently chaired Springfields Site Stakeholder Group (SSG) at the company’s Springfields site. The stakeholder group consists of council members, regulators, local interest groups’ representatives and local residents and is an important partner to Westinghouse.
Mark Menzies, MP for Fylde and the constituency of Westinghouse’s Springfields site, said “I have written a letter of support to the Chancellor of the Exchequer regarding Westinghouse’s proposal to produce Small Modular Reactors for the U.K. market, as supporting highly skilled home-grown jobs and skills, whilst providing significant supply chain opportunities is at the heart of the company's plan. I am pleased to see the company engaging with stakeholders as part of the process as their feedback will be essential moving forward with the proposal.”
“Our stakeholders are an important part of the success of Westinghouse’s SMR offering to the U.K. Government, with valuable opinions,” said Simon Marshall, U.K. director responsible for SMR. “The recent Nuclear AMRC study into the Westinghouse Small Modular Reactor strengthens this offering, finding that the Westinghouse design provides the ability to source locally the steel and forge, machine and then assemble all of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV), one of the most demanding parts of any reactor.”
Westinghouse has an established and successful U.K. nuclear business, with more than 1,000 employees employed at the Springfields site. Springfields is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and has a long-standing history of contributing to the U.K.’s nuclear industry. Westinghouse’s commitment coupled with the innovative and industry-leading reactor technology offers more than any other SMR provider can to the U.K. Government.
