NIRAS will invest 13 percent of its annual profits over the next 10 years to support green energy transition
The consulting engineering company NIRAS has decided to increase its contribution to the green energy transition significantly over the next ten years. The ambition is to become Scandinavia's leading consultant on renewable energy.
The strategic initiative includes massive investment in research and development, competence development, partnerships, and recruitment in the fields of wind energy, electricity, and green fuels. A total of 13 percent of NIRAS’s earnings will therefore be invested in green energy conversion efforts. The investment is expected to start contributing to NIRAS 'earnings in 2027 and will include hiring 400 additional people.
“NIRAS has been working with renewable energy for many years - in fact ever since the Brundtland report was published in 1987. Therefore, it is in our DNA that we contribute to the green energy transition. We have now laid out an ambitious plan which will run over the next 10 years with a consistently high level of investment in every year, ”says Jens Brandt Bering, Director of Supply at NIRAS.
In search of a new Group Director
Part of the strategic initiative is to expand Senior Management with a new Group Director for Energy. This person will be at the head of a newly created task force specialising in green energy transition, which will work across all areas of the company’s consultancy activities.
This is based on a firm conviction that collaboration across engineering disciplines, and a willingness to enter into broad partnerships, is crucial for the pace and level of innovation required for the conversion to renewable energy.
“In Denmark alone, hundreds of billions of Danish kroner (DKK) must be invested in green energy conversion over the next 10 years. We want to become an even more attractive partner in the transition to renewable energy, and NIRAS already has a very good grip on, among other things, environmental studies and permits, as well as electrification, wind, solar, sector coupling, Power-to-X, and the North Sea Energy Island project,” says CEO Carsten Toft Boesen.
"We work with everyone who wants to move in the right direction, regardless of the starting point"
The initiative covers all energy areas and types with the aim of moving them as much as possible towards renewable energy and in a way that is socially and economically optimal. This means that NIRAS is ready to work with anyone who wants to become part of the green energy transition.
“Almost all companies and organisations today are aware of their CO2 footprint and the need for transition to renewable energy. Many new, hugely exciting companies, which develop and deliver solutions for the green energy transition, are emerging in this area. We would like to work with the companies and organisations that work with and want green energy conversion, ”says Jens Brandt Bering, and continues:
“We are moving toward the green energy transition with a pragmatic mindset. Everyone can and should contribute in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. It is also about creating advances in green energy where they are most needed. As long as we are going in the right direction together, we will not exclude anyone from our future work on green energy transition. Perfect is the enemy of good – and we cannot afford to let a wish for perfection get in the way of the green energy transition. Not least because we have to ensure a high level of security of supply along the way, or risk losing all-important popular and thus political support. For NIRAS the decisive thing is not a company’s past, starting point or profile, but rather its ambition, pace and direction, ”he says.
Concurrently with the strategy for green energy transition in the NIRAS Group, the NIRAS Fund will strengthen its investment in research and development in conversion to renewable energy sources, as well as increasing its focus on acquisitions of companies within the same area.
