Foreign Minister Kofod’s phone call with State Councilor and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi today

Today, Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod had a phone conversation with State Councilor and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China Wang Yi. Russia and the war in Ukraine was the focus of the talk.

China has not condemned Russia’s aggression in Ukraine but is signaling neutrality and encourages the parties to find a negotiated solution. At the same time, China has expressed understanding for Russia’s demands for security guarantees.

Foreign Minister Kofod states:

“Today I had a constructive and honest phone call with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

I strongly called on China to use its influence in Moscow to stop the war. Large countries have special responsibilities and cannot remain neutral.”

The two Ministers also followed-up on their meeting in China in November 2021. They discussed bilateral relations between Denmark and China and the human rights situation in China. The Danish Foreign Minister also raised his concern about the lack of market access for Danish companies in China and the severe challenges that China's Covid restrictions pose for Danish citizens and companies.

Foreign Minister Kofod says:

“We also discussed the work towards concluding a green joint work program. We cannot stop global warming without China. And China is such a large country that Danish green solutions can make a real impact. That would be good for the planet and for Danish economy.

I also raised my serious concern over the human rights situation in China, especially repeated reports of systematic human rights violations in Xinjiang and the need for independent UN access to the province."

The G20 Presidencies of Italy, Indonesia, and India were all key to launching and driving forward the G20 CAF Review. The implementation of several of its recommendations by the MDBs has already generated significant additional MDB financing capacity.
