On Monday 2 May, Denmark is reopening its embassy in Ukraine, as Denmark’s Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod visits the country.

“Reopening the Danish embassy is a strong symbol of Denmark’s support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Our diplomatic staff has been working tirelessly on strengthening Danish-Ukrainian relations and helping both Danes and Ukrainians in the highly challenging situation following Russia’s invasion. Today, I am happy to announce that we are back in the heart of the Kyiv”, says Foreign Minister Kofod.

While the number of embassy staff will initially be limited, the plan is to return gradually to normal staffing. The embassy will be handling political tasks related to the close relationship between Denmark and Ukraine, including the comprehensive Danish assistance to Ukraine, as well as limited consular assistance.

“As the security situation in Ukraine remains very difficult, the reopening does not signal a complete return to normality, and we continue to advise Danes against travelling to Ukraine. However, the reopening is an important step in the right direction,’ says Foreign Minister Kofod.

During his visit to Kyiv, Minister Kofod will meet Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and visit one of Kyiv’s suburbs, which has suffered heavy devastation from Russian attacks. Denmark’s military and humanitarian support for Ukraine, increased humanitarian assistance, long-term reconstruction plans, and the investigation and prosecution of war crimes during the Russian invasion will be on the agenda.
