WESTINGHOUSE
Westinghouse Electric Company signed a contract with Barsebäck Kraft AB to support the first dismantling of a commercial nuclear power plant in Sweden by segmenting the reactor pressure vessel internals at the dual-unit Barsebäck Nuclear Power Station.
Barsebäck is an ABB-designed boiling water reactor (BWR) plant in the south of Sweden, 30 kilometers from Malmö. The first reactor, Barsebäck 1, closed Nov. 30, 1999, and the second, Barsebäck 2, ceased operation May 31, 2005.
“This is a strategically important contract for Westinghouse. We are pleased to have this opportunity to serve our customers in the last phase of the nuclear power plant life cycle,” said Aziz Dag, Westinghouse vice president and managing director, Northern Europe.
Westinghouse’s work to dismantle, segment and package the reactor pressure vessel internals – the closest components to the reactor core – for final disposal will significantly reduce the amount of radioactivity remaining in the plant since operation stopped and facilitate safe dismantling of the remainder of its components. Westinghouse will implement its proven, remotely controlled underwater mechanical cutting techniques, and employ specifically designed equipment the company will fabricate and test at its facilities in Västerås, Sweden, to remove them.
The project will begin immediately and is expected to take about four years to complete. Mechanical segmentation will begin in 2016.
Westinghouse has more than 30 years of project experience in pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor power plant reactor pressure vessel internals (RPVI) segmentation and packaging, most recently winning the award for a Westinghouse-led consortium from EnBW Kernkraft GmbH (EnKK) for Philippsburg unit 1. Westinghouse has also been contracted for dismantling work at Électricité de France’s Chooz nuclear power plant in France, at Empresa Nacional de Residuos Radiactivos’ José Cabrera Nuclear Power Station (also known as Zorita) in Spain, and at EnKK’s Neckarwestheim unit 1, also operated by EnKK.
Westinghouse Europe, Middle East and Africa Region President Yves Brachet said of the recent awards, “Westinghouse continues to invest, optimize and develop our tooling, processes and people using our global technology and experience to serve customers around the world. We are gratified that our commitments are recognized by our customers through these awards.”
Westinghouse provides comprehensive, integrated services to the global decommissioning and decontamination and waste management nuclear plant market, including state-of-the-art solutions for handling spent fuel and treating, handling and storing low-, intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste. Westinghouse’s global workforce of highly skilled technical and craft personnel focus on safety and quality to deliver predictably successful results.
Westinghouse Electric Company, a group company of Toshiba Corporation (TKY:6502), is the world's pioneering nuclear energy company and is a leading supplier of nuclear plant products and technologies to utilities throughout the world. Westinghouse supplied the world's first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957 in Shippingport, Pa., U.S. Today, Westinghouse technology is the basis for approximately one-half of the world's operating nuclear plants, including more than 50 percent of those in Europe.
