Westinghouse Awarded Long-Term Inspection Contract for Switzerland’s Leibstadt Nuclear Station

Westinghouse Electric Co. and its subsidiary WesDyne International today announced that, after an extensive public tender process, it has been awarded a long-term contract for reactor pressure vessel nozzle inspection at Leibstadt Nuclear Power Plant (KKL) in Switzerland. The six-year contract includes an option for four additional years. WesDyne is the nondestructive inspection branch of Westinghouse Electric Co.

The contract’s scope includes qualification of the KKL mechanized ultrasonic inspection system using a state-of-the-art phased array technique and yearly inspections of eight different nozzle types — 56 total — with each nozzle having up to three welds. A total of 127 welds will be inspected over the project’s duration. Westinghouse has been performing these inspections at KKL over the past 10 years.

This contract will be executed primarily out of Westinghouse’s facility in Mannheim and supported by an international team of experts from WesDyne. According to Westinghouse, this contract award is seen by the company as a confirmation of the great success of work already performed and KKL’s high level of satisfaction with that work.

“We are absolutely delighted to have won this contract. We are so pleased that we will be able to continue our trusting, fruitful cooperation with Leibstadt, delivering inspections to the highest standards,” said Dr. Norbert Haspel, Westinghouse vice president and managing director, Central Europe.

"We are pleased to continue cooperation with Westinghouse to provide Leibstadt with their proven combination of safety-focused inspection techniques and experience-driven duration times that will maximize our plant's availability," said Michael Kessler, Mechanical Engineering Department manager, KKL.

WesDyne is a leading supplier of mechanized nondestructive examination (NDE) products for all inspection needs worldwide, providing turnkey and one-off-type solutions with a focus on the nuclear market. WesDyne’s expertise spans all aspects of remote and mechanized inspections, from problem analysis and solutions generation to development and manufacturing to field deployment of personnel and equipment. Inspection capabilities cover all key NDE areas such as ultrasonic, visual, eddy current, magnetic particle, dye penetrant and X-ray.
