The Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm has selected the Olympus ENDOALPHA control system for 35 operating rooms due to enter service when the hospital opens in 2016. ENDOALPHA is an integrated platform for controlling every medical device in OR and simplifying communication processes. Together with Olympus ENDOALPHA, Karolinska University Hospital is aiming to find more standardized ways of working in order set a new global benchmark for comprehensive patient care.

Currently under construction in central Stockholm, on completion Karolinska University Hospital will be Europe’s largest and most advanced hospital complex. The new hospital aims to provide medical care of the very highest standard, by harnessing the capabilities of the best, most innovative system solutions available. To achieve this goal, the project leaders have chosen to work with Olympus systems – and identified investment in the ENDOALPHA integrated system platform as a core component of that collaboration. The installation of ENDOALPHA in 35 operating rooms will ensure highest system quality standards for every operation, anywhere in the complex. Moreover, the system’s uniform user interface will simplify workflow and enhance communication throughout the hospital.

Olympus ENDOALPHA Control and Video Management Systems enable medical personnel to coordinate and monitor every medical device installed in OR, from video cameras to lighting and 3D endoscopes – irrespective of manufacturer. Surgeons can call up critical information directly at the operating table, or consult colleagues via live video conference.

The ENDOALPHA documentation system is integrated within the hospital’s own information system, so that patient profiles can be accessed anywhere and everywhere in the hospital. The intelligent layout of the interface makes the system easy to use for surgeons and other medical staff, with access via an intuitive touchscreen. By standardising OR procedures, ENDOALPHA reduces workload on a day-to-day basis.

Indeed, Olympus’ involvement in this ground-breaking project extends beyond installation of ENDOALPHA in the ORs. Olympus will manage the project for its full four-year duration. Its responsibilities include coordinating all equipment - Olympus and third-party - to be integrated in the ENDOALPHA solution. In addition, Olympus will manage integration of the system within the hospital IT platform. Another essential part of the cooperation is an innovation partnership. This partnership aims to explore innovative, patient-driven ways to deliver improved healthcare.

Karolinska University Hospital is one of Sweden’s most advanced university hospitals, and is associated with one of the world’s best medical research facilities – the Karolinska Institute. Every year, the institute appoints the laureates for the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. The construction of the new hospital is a seminal project for Swedish medical and academic research.
