Biogenic Reagents Begins Commercial Production of New Ultra-Adsorptive Graphene-Carbon Compounds From Renewable Sources
Better Able to Purify Air and Water and Outperform Traditional Activated
Carbons Made From Coal
MINNEAPOLIS, 2013-08-05 15:00 CEST (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --
Biogenic Reagents ("Biogenic"), a leading manufacturer of high-performance
carbon and producer of over a half dozen leading-edge patent-pending carbon
technologies, today announced it has begun commercial production of new
Ultra-Adsorptive Carbon ("UAC") products. UAC products are made from renewable
biomass, outperform existing coal-based products and are expected to displace
the use of traditional activated carbon products for air and water
purification.
Biogenic will manufacture UACs at its state-of-the-art Marquette, Michigan
facility, which is the largest advanced biocarbon production facility in the
United States. The innovative facility uses renewable energy and has the
smallest environmental impact per unit of production of any activated carbon
producer in the world.
Activated carbon is commonly made from coal and is processed to create a highly
porous material for use in removing impurities from liquids and gases.
Biogenic's new commercial process produces a graphene-carbon compound from a
wood feedstock that has approximately 50% greater adsorptive capacity than
typical coal-based activated carbon products available in the market today,
according to laboratory testing.
James Mennell, Chief Executive Officer of Biogenic, said, "Biogenic is a
pioneer in low cost, high-performance carbon products that conserve and improve
air and water quality and the environment. We are excited to introduce our new
Ultra-Adsorptive Carbon products for a wide range of customers and uses. Most
graphene produced today is made from fossil fuels and is produced in very small
amounts. Our new UAC products can be produced on a commercial scale and are
proven to better purify food, water and air than current activated carbon and
will enhance the lives of end-consumers on a global basis. At Biogenic, we
don't waste water, we purify it."
Dan Despen, Biogenic's Chief Technology Officer, said, "Graphene is considered
a 'material of the future,' and at Biogenic, we are producing and using it
today. Our UACs have greater adsorptive capacity than products currently in the
market, and because of our proprietary process and inexpensive feedstock, our
company can produce the UACs for less than the cost of coal-based products.
Importantly, unlike other major producers of activated carbon that use and
discharge millions of gallons of water each year, production of Biogenic's new
graphene-carbon products does not create any wastewater."
Mennell added, "In addition to the financial backing from our partner, MVC
Capital, Inc., which we recently closed on, we plan on expanding our Michigan
production facility and will be better positioned to develop and commercialize
new environmental technologies that will reduce our customers' costs and
benefit the environment."
