His Majesty The King to open new exhibition on the SIRIUS Dog Sledge Patrol

The SIRIUS Dog Sledge Patrol is Denmark’s Arctic special forces unit and the only one of its kind in the world.

In icy snowstorms and temperatures as low as minus 50°C, patrol teams consisting of two men, a dog sled and 13 sled dogs cover 5,000 kilometres while enforcing the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark in Northeast Greenland.

The upcoming special exhibition ‘SIRIUS – patrolling the Arctic’ explores what it is really like to work under such extreme conditions and examines the role the dog sledge patrol plays in the Arctic today and in the future.

His Majesty The King will attend the official opening reception at The Danish War Museum in Copenhagen on 7 October from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, before the exhibition opens to the public on 8 October.

In 2000, His Majesty The King took part in ‘Expedition Sirius 2000’, a four-month, 2,795-kilometre dog sledge expedition around the northern coast of Greenland. The expedition marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the SIRIUS Dog Sledge Patrol.

Several former SIRIUS patrol leaders will also attend the opening reception.

The press is invited to attend the opening reception, where His Majesty The King will visit the new exhibition.

Due to the exhibition layout and the limited space available for photography and filming, only a limited number of media representatives can be accommodated.

Media representatives who have submitted an application will be notified within 24 hours (on weekdays) whether they have been granted access.  Access will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

About The Danish War Museum

The museum is housed in Christian IV’s former Arsenal on Tøjhusgade 3 in central Copenhagen.

The museum’s exhibitions explore 500 years of Danish military history, from the 16th century to the present day. Visitors gain insight into the everyday lives of soldiers and learn how weapons, technology and strategy can determine victory or defeat.

The special exhibition ‘SIRIUS – Patrolling the Arctic’ can be experienced at The Danish War Museum from 8 October and for the following two years.
