Denmark to host 2032 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships

The award, announced by the UCI at its Congress in Montréal, returns the sport’s flagship event to Fyn thirteen years after the successful 2019 World Championships and further strengthens Denmark’s position as one of the world’s leading hosts of major cycling events.

Up to 20,000 spectators are expected, including a substantial international following, and the course will be created around the grounds of Egeskov Castle, a remarkably well-preserved Renaissance castle surrounded by the countryside of central Fyn.

UCI President David Lappartient said: “I am delighted that we will return to Denmark with the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in 2032. Fyn is a magnificent region that promotes cycling both as an everyday activity and an Elite sport. It is for that reason, it was awarded the UCI Bike Region label in 2017. Two years later it welcomed the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, to Bogense, and we look forward to going back to this beautiful region to crown our UCI Cyclo-cross World Champions in just over five years’ time.”

A world-class championship in a distinctive setting

The Danish bid was presented by the Danish Cycling Federation in partnership with Sport Event Denmark, Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality, and Destination Fyn.

“Together with Sport Event Denmark, Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality, and Destination Fyn, we submitted an exceptionally strong bid with a professional organisation and a spectacular venue. The fact that the UCI has awarded the World Championships to Denmark says a great deal about how we are regarded as a host nation. It demonstrates that Danish cycling is not only part of the world elite in sporting terms, but that we also have the event organisation, facilities, and, not least, the dedicated volunteers required to deliver some of the biggest events. I look forward to showing once again that we can live up to that trust and stage world-class championships,” said Morten Anderson, President of the Danish Cycling Federation.

Denmark has a proud tradition of elite cycling success across multiple disciplines, including road, track, BMX, MTB, and cyclo-cross. Combined with a strong cycling infrastructure, sustainability mindset, and internationally recognised cycling knowledge, Denmark offers a unique setting for the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships.

International cyclo-cross meets Renaissance Denmark

Cyclo-cross traditionally attracts a highly engaged international audience, particularly from Belgium and the Netherlands. Denmark aims to combine the intensity and accessibility of the racing with a venue offering television, photographers, and travelling supporters a distinctive visual identity.

Anstina Krogh, Mayor of Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality, said:

“The UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships will be a fantastic showcase for our area. They support the story of the many outdoor opportunities available in our municipality and give us the chance to present them, our magnificent Renaissance castle, and the everyday culture of central Fyn to the many visitors who will come here.”

The hosts also want the championships to create a lasting connection between international cycling fans and Fyn. Experiences from the 2019 cyclo-cross championships indicate the tourism potential of cyclo-cross, especially in the Belgian and Dutch markets.

The ambition is that international supporters will not only attend the championships but return to explore Fyn by bicycle. The island has introduced a recreational cycle network using the numbered junction system already familiar to cyclists from Belgium and the Netherlands.

A new chapter in Denmark’s cycling story

For Sport Event Denmark, the championship demonstrates Denmark’s established position as a host of major international cycling events while offering a setting that will distinguish the 2032 edition internationally.

The combination of world-class cyclo-cross, Denmark’s cycling culture, the fairy-tale island of Hans Christian Andersen, and the unique surroundings of the castle create a story that few destinations in the world can match. It is this kind of narrative that has helped us establish an increasingly strong position as an international sporting event destination over the past decade,” said Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark.

When the international cyclo-cross elite arrives in 2032, the battle for the rainbow jerseys will therefore unfold in a setting that brings together racing, Danish cycling culture, and the historic landscape of Fyn.
