UK scholarship opens for applications from Greenlandic students

The Chevening Scholarship is part of the UK Government’s international scholarship programme for future leaders.  

Through its new Greenland programme, up to two applicants will be able to receive funding for tuition fees, travel and living costs to undertake a one-year Master's degree at selected UK universities. 

Applications opened 4 August and will remain open until October. The first scholars are expected to begin their studies in the UK in September 2027. 

British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, Victoria Billing, is encouraging prospective candidates to apply: 

"We hope to receive applications from ambitious and engaged candidates from across Greenland. Chevening is about giving future leaders in any field or discipline an opportunity to develop their professional skills, broaden their international outlook and join an amazing global network that will benefit both their own careers and Greenland's future." 

The programme is open to applicants who hold an undergraduate degree and have approximately two years’ of work experience. Applications are welcome from all academic disciplines, but the programme has a particular focus on areas including sustainability, environmental science, natural sciences, engineering, green technologies, economics, project management, transport and logistics. 

Scholarship recipients will bring new knowledge and global networks back to Greenland 

Today, the Chevening network includes more than 60,000 alumni from over 140 countries. Scholarship recipients therefore become part of a global community of professionals, decision-makers and future leaders. 

As part of the scholarship, recipients commit to returning to Greenland for at least two years after completing their studies, bringing their new knowledge and experience back to their communities. According to Victoria Billing, this is a central element of the programme: 

"Greenland faces a number of important opportunities and challenges in the years ahead. We want to invest in people who will help shape that future. Our ambition is for Chevening scholars to return home with new perspectives, strong international networks, and the skills and experience to make a lasting contribution to Greenland." 

The scholarship is delivered through a partnership between the Government of Greenland, the UK Government, and the British mining company Amaroq as the programme's funding partner. 

In addition to studying in the UK, scholarship recipients will have access to mentoring opportunities and relevant industry experience through the programme.
