The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to open new embassies

Accordingly, Denmark will open new embassies in Argentina and Albania in 2026. Denmark will also upgrade the existing office in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to a Consulate General and appoint a new Special Representative to Central Asia.

In addition, the Danish Embassy in Myanmar will close.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has informed the Foreign Policy Committee of the adjustments.

The adjustments should be seen in light of the government’s ambition to build new partnerships at a time of growing uncertainty.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, states:

“The world is changing rapidly. This presents us with new challenges, but also involves great opportunities. We must have a strong and up-to-date foreign service that is present in the countries where our vital interests are at stake, and we have moved further in that direction today.”

With an embassy in Albania, Denmark will be able to support the country’s desire to become a member of the EU and strengthen its resilience, including against negative influence from Russia.

The establishment of a new Danish embassy in Argentina should be seen in the light of the ambition to increase Denmark’s engagement in Latin America. Argentina is a major player on the continent, and an embassy will provide an opportunity to expand our trade relations.

The appointment of a Special Representative to Central Asia will strengthen Denmark’s relations with a region that we wish to draw closer to Europe, and whose geopolitical significance is increasing.

With a Consulate General in Vietnam, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be better positioned to promote Denmark’s economic interests in the region and assist Danish companies. Ho Chi Minh City is the financial heart of Vietnam and home to the majority of the approximately 135 Danish companies present in the country.

As a consequence of Denmark having gradually scaled down our commitment in Myanmar, the embassy in Myanmar will close by the end of 2026. The framework conditions for cooperation have significantly deteriorated since the military coup, and there are currently no indications that this will change. The resources will be redirected to other purposes, where Denmark has greater foreign policy and commercial interests.

Background

The new Danish missions follow in the wake of the other new embassies launched by the government within the past two years - in Tunisia, Rwanda, Senegal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, and Malaysia.

In that connection, it was also decided that the embassy in Tanzania would not close, as previously planned.

With the new adjustments, Denmark will have a total of 105 missions abroad worldwide. 71 of these are embassies.

Denmark still has fewer missions around the world than the countries that we usually compare ourselves with. This includes Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands.
