Ukraine House in Denmark Opens "Coming Home for Christmas" Exhibition

The project immerses visitors in the atmosphere of the holiday, where living rituals, family customs, and the craftsmanship of Ukrainian artisans and artists continue to bring light, a sense of home, and hope — even in times of hardship, war, and separation.

For Ukrainians, Christmas has always meant more than a date on the calendar. It is family, renewal, and light that unite generations. This is a special time when the house is open to guests, and there is a place for everyone. Today, when many families cannot gather around one festive table, the symbolic feeling of a shared home — Ukraine — gains exceptional depth, transcending borders and distance. That is why we invite you to Ukraine House in Denmark. Ancient traditions, carols, crafts, and festive symbols once again bring all people together — and this exhibition seeks to share that spirit of unity with Copenhagen.

The exhibition features traditional festive clothing, ceramics, carpets, ritual decorations, archival recordings of ancient carols, and authentic recipes for Christmas dishes. Alongside historical artifacts are works by contemporary Ukrainian artists and designers who reinterpret folk crafts, keeping the living pulse of tradition alive.

Among the highlights are hand-woven carpets and embroidered festive tablecloths from different regions of Ukraine, ritual candleholders known as Triytsia, as well as examples of ceremonial pottery and traditional carved chests.

A special section curated by Olena Braichenko, a researcher of Ukrainian food culture, is devoted to the Sviata Vecheria — the Holy Supper, a twelve-symbolic dish feast that embodies gratitude, faith, and peace in every Ukrainian home.

The exhibition is complemented by ancient traditional and contemporary recordings of carols and shchedrivky — songs of joy and blessing that fill Ukrainian homes “from Roman to Jordan,” creating a magical soundscape for the entire winter festive season.

Opening Event on November 29:
The exhibition opens at 17:00 with an official program and a guided tour. Following the opening, guests are invited to enjoy a Christmas concert by Endangered Songs, a collective of young Ukrainian singers dedicated to preserving and revitalizing traditional carols from regions that have stood — and continue to stand — on the front line.
