According to DanChurchAid Secretary General, Jonas Nøddekær, the climate fight needs to be revived as it has lost momentum—and he certainly hasn’t lost hope.

"I hope the ministers have a productive meeting this week. I hope they’ll discuss how the world’s nations can increase their focus on adaptation, loss and damage, and the climate disasters that threaten both growth and development. The recent Spring Meetings of the World Bank revealed that more of the world’s finance ministers are beginning to realize the need to raise additional funds for climate adaptation. The faster we adapt to climate change, the lower the final cost. That realization is very straightforward and creates a momentum that can revive the climate fight," he says.

One of the key topics at the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial is the new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which countries are expected to submit during 2025. These plans are a vital part of the Paris Agreement. They include countries’ goals and strategies to prevent the global average temperature from rising more than 1.5°C.

"It is crucial that ambitious targets are set this year, if the Paris Agreement is to be respected. High-income countries bear a significant responsibility. These countries emit the most CO2, while it is mainly low-income countries that suffer the consequences of climate change. For all countries, it makes financial sense to act now. At the same time, ambitious climate action could help lift 175 million people out of extreme poverty," says Jonas Nøddekær.

Leading up to the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial, DanChurchAid, Concito and the NDC Partnership is hosting an event on May 6 from 5 to 7 PM, focusing on climate, security, and critical infrastructure.

The event will take place at DanChurchAid’s headquarters in Copenhagen and will also be available via online streaming. Registration is required. Learn more and register here: Climate change, Security & Critical Infrastructure - A Copenhagen Climate Ministerial side-event - DanChurchAid.
