Tourists on China’s First Zero-Carbon Island, Dachen Island, to experience the sustainable living.

Historically known as the testing ground for China’s first-generation wind turbines, Dachen Island has evolved into a shining example of green innovation. Through a series of cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure upgrades, the island has successfully achieved zero carbon emissions, embodying China’s broader aspirations for a greener future.

Mao Haiming, manager of Haichao Homestay on Dachen Island, shared how his business has embraced this transformation:

“I opened my first homestay in 2018. The key to making it fully electric was the kitchen,” he explained. “We use only electricity—no gas or other energy sources. That’s why we call it a fully electric homestay, powered entirely by clean energy.”

To encourage sustainable behavior, guests receive a “Green Island Rewards Card” upon check-in. By participating in eco-friendly activities, they can earn points to redeem rewards such as free bike rentals, offering an engaging way to experience the island’s zero-carbon lifestyle.

Today, Dachen Island boasts 32 fully electric homestays—all powered by wind-generated electricity—cutting energy costs by nearly 20%.

Both residents and tourists are embracing this cleaner way of life. The island offers a range of eco-friendly transportation options, both on land and at sea. Most vehicles bear green license plates, signifying their electric nature, and free electric buses are available to support daily mobility.

An electric bus driver shared, “Our electricity comes directly from the wind turbines right here on Upper Dachen Island. Just two turbines generate enough power for both Upper and Lower Dachen. Even in the summer, we only need a quick 30-minute recharge. Daily energy costs are around 100 yuan per bus, which is significantly more economical than fuel-powered vehicles.”

Backed by strong wind resources and an optimized energy system built by Taizhou Power Supply Company, Dachen Island has become a model of green transformation—setting a new benchmark for sustainable living across China's islands.
