The competition for the CIVIS Media Prize 2024 is open: Submissions welcome until 19 January 2024

6.12.2023 – Cologne (ots) | The competition for the European CIVIS Media Prize is open. Media professionals from all EU countries and Switzerland are invited to submit contributions on the topics of migration, integration, cultural diversity and - in this context - social cohesion online by 19 January 2024. The CIVIS Media Prize honours outstanding TV, radio and online productions that promote the peaceful coexistence between people from different geographical and cultural backgrounds. It is endowed with a total of 27,000 euros.

New 2024: Productions that were first shown at a festival in the period from 21 January 2023 to 19 January 2024 can also be submitted for the CIVIS VIDEO AWARD. The festival must be staged in the EU or Switzerland. Further information can be found in the conditions of participation.

Nine different CIVIS prizes are awarded in four areas and various categories:

CIVIS VIDEO AWARD:

  • non-fiction programmes
  • fiction programmes
  • social media formats (moving images)

CIVIS AUDIO AWARD (German language):

  • short programmes of up to six minutes
  • long programmes over six minutes
  • podcasts

YOUNG C. AWARD (films by creators of up to 38 years)

CIVIS CINEMA AWARD (audience award)

The CIVIS TOP AWARD is an additional prize for the best production of the year in the AUDIO, VIDEO and YOUNG C. categories. Direct candidatures for the CIVIS TOP AWARD are not possible. The winner will be chosen by the jury chairpersons from the winners in the various categories.

The CIVIS Media Prize is sponsored by ARD, represented by WDR, together with the Freudenberg Foundation. The ORF, SRG SSR, ARTE, 3sat, phoenix, Deutsche Welle, Deutschlandradio and the EBU are media partners. The WDR mediagroup, Produzentenallianz, VFF Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the Open Society Foundations and the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie are cooperation partners.

The European Parliament is patron of the CIVIS Media Prize 2024.

The non-profit CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity, based in Cologne, is responsible for organising the competition, jury meetings and the award ceremony.

The European CIVIS Media Prize aims to encourage media professionals to deal with issues of migration, integration, cultural diversity and social cohesion in a creative, constructive and, where necessary, (self) critical way.

27.05.2024 – Berlin (ots) | The winners of the European CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity 2024 have been announced: The main prize of 15,000 euros, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the social media format STRG_F: Israel and Gaza: Life between terror and war (NDR | funk) by authors Manuel Biallas, Armin Ghassim, Lisa Hagen, Mariam Noori, Timo Robben, Sulaiman Tadmory. The film depicts the fate of two young people affected by Hamas' attack on Israel and Israel's war in Gaza: the German-Israeli Yarden and the German-Palestinian Abed. The production is also the winner of the CIVIS VIDEO AWARD in the Social Media Formats category. 06.06.2023 – Berlin (ots) | The winners of the European CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity 2023 have been announced: The main prize of 15,000 euros, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the documentary ARTE THEMA: Last Refuge - The House at the Gate to the Sahara (ARTE G.E.I.E), by the author and director Ousmane Samassékou. A work about people on the move, on the southern edge of the Sahara, about their dreams and traumas. The production is also the winner of the CIVIS VIDEO AWARD in the category Information. Explaining its decision, the jury of the CIVIS Media Prize states: „The documentary tells of the fortunes of these migrants, empathetically but never obtrusively, close but never encroaching. 18.04.2023 Cologne (ots) | CIVIS Media Prize 2023 – 24 nominees for Europe's most important media prize for integration and cultural diversity have been shortlisted. Candidates for the CIVIS Media Prize include, among others, entries from 3sat, ARTE, Deutschlandradio, The Europeans, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, University of Television and Film Munich, Kobalt Productions, Lighthouse Reports, NDR, Radio Bremen, SRF, SWR, SVT, TV Rain, WDR and ZDF. The productions, diverse in style and approach, deal with highly topical issues such as war in Ukraine, flight, labour migration, racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Ziganism, homeland and identity. Close to 900 productions from television, radio and the Internet were submitted for the CIVIS Competition 2023. They came from 22 EU states and Switzerland. 03.06.2022 – Cologne (ots) | The winners of the European CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity 2022 have been announced: The main prize of 15,000 euros, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the documentary film Schwarze Adler (Black Eagles) (Amazon Prime Video | BROADVIEW | ZDF), by author and director Torsten Körner. The film tells the story of social prejudice and hostility against black footballers. It is also the winner of the CIVIS VIDEO AWARD in the information category. The jury of the CIVIS Media Prize praised Torsten Körner´s documentary as “emotionally moving, journalistically and artistically to the point - the plight of these eagles in the German national jersey gets under your skin."
