5 Stalks of Wheat: Letter to the Danish Parliament on Recognition of the Holodomor as Genocide
As we approach the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor and the December hearings in the Danish Parliament regarding the recognition of the Holodomor as genocide, yesterday, our public initiative group met with the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs to advocate for acknowledgement and justice.
We've initiated a symbolic gesture—Danish parliamentarians are now in possession of the artistically displayed bouquets of the five stalks of wheat, reminding them of the sinister Soviet Decree of 5 Stalks of Wheat. This law was one in a series of resolutions that enabled the deliberate killing by starvation of a minimum 4 million of Ukrainians in 1932-1933. We are joined by the leaders of Ukrainian organizations within the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark and the Ukrainian faith-based organizations in an appeal to the Danish Folketing to join the 36 nations and organizations and recognize Holodomor as the genocide of Ukrainian people.
Such decision by the Danish Parliament would be yet another very powerful and symbolic gesture of recognition by the international democratic community of the horrible truth about the crime against Ukrainian people.
Head of the Ukrainian House in Denmark, Nataliya Popovych, stressed the need for political responsibility: "We can't leave the recognition of the Holodomor to historians. It's time for societies to acknowledge the crimes of the Soviet regime, especially the hidden crime against millions of Ukrainians. In the 1930s, Danish politicians played a role in determining assistance to Ukrainians. Today, as Denmark supports Ukraine in our defending of freedom for all, we urge the Danish parliamentarians to correct historical injustice by recognizing the Holodomor and continuing to assist Ukraine in seeking justice in the 21st century."

On November 25 at 16:00, we invite you to the commemorative event “Holodomor – 90: impact on Ukraine and the future of justice” at Ukraine House in Denmark.
Please join us in lighting candles to commemorate 90 years since the Holodomor, one of the darkest chapters in our nation's history.
A renowned historian and law expert, Dr. Ivan Horodyskyy, founding director of the Law School of the Ukrainian Catholic University, Vice-President of the Ukrainian Bar Association, researcher and author of the book on Rafael Lemkin, will join us from Ukraine to discuss the context and impact of this Soviet crime upon the Ukrainian culture, as well as offer a perspective on the learnings we should be drawing from Holodomor.
The event will be launched by the Ambassador of Ukraine with the participation of the Danish dignitaries, representatives of different faith-based organizations and community leaders, united in a service of remembrance. It will be a time to reflect, through prayer and dialogue, on the profound lessons of the past and acknowledge the evils of the past to prevent it from happening again in our time. Ukrainian bread, the biggest deficit during Holodomor, as well as Ukrainian wine will be served.
