Ukraine House Denmark is proud to host profound reflections and celebrations of the Ukrainian spirit and culture. This month, we've curated events that promise to connect, enlighten, and inspire our network of friends and supporters.

On Nov. 15, we are delighted to welcome Ukrainian children’s writer Kateryna Yegorushkina for a discussion exploring the poignant themes of war as conveyed through children’s literature, followed by a presentation of her newly translated into Danish book, "My Forced Vacation". This discussion will provide a unique perspective on the role of storytelling for children in times of warfare and will include a reading session for children.

On Nov. 17, as part of our next Film Friday and in the lead-up to a discussion on Nov. 20, we will be screening Oscar-nominated documentary “Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom” chronicling the 2014 Revolution of Dignity and the bloody struggle of the Ukrainian people for their desire to move away from Russian influence.

On Nov. 20, we are particularly honored to host a panel discussion titled 10 Years after the Revolution of Dignity: Ukraine and the World Transformed, as we look back on this pivotal moment in history, where Ukrainian people stood united and sacrificed their lives for the freedom and dignity of their nation. During the discussion, we will reflect on:

  • The power of the people in transforming the Ukrainian nation
  • Standing up for human values: from ideas to global action
  • Ukraine’s 10-year journey in opposing tyranny
  • Perspectives from Ukrainians and Danes on lessons from the past
  • Envisioning a future that matters for humanists worldwide

Speakers visiting us from Ukraine:

  • Dr. Volodymyr Yermolenko, Ukrainian philosopher, journalist, writer, president of PEN Ukraine, editor of UkraineWorld, a project of Internews Ukraine
  • Dr. Tetyana Ogarkova, Head of International Outreach at Ukraine Crisis Media Center, Co-Author of KultPodcast will be joined by the esteemed Danish experts and a moderator

Charlotte Flindt Pedersen, President of Danish Foreign Policy Society

Johannes Wamberg Andersen, historian, and long-time resident in Ukraine

Moderator: Jonas Parello Plesner, Director, Alliance of Democracies

The echoes of the past will resonate further as at 16:00 on Nov. 25, we invite you to join us in lighting candles at Ukraine House to commemorate 90 years since the Holodomor, one of the darkest chapters in our nation's history.

Holodomor, also known as the Great Famine of 1932-33, was a man-made famine orchestrated by the Soviet authorities under the orders of Joseph Stalin which killed an estimated 3-7 million Ukrainians by criminalizing food ownership, making emigration impossible, and increasing food exports under strict collectivisation policies as villages starved. In lighting our candles, we will be standing in solidarity with millions of Ukrainians at home and around the world who light candles every year on the fourth Saturday of November at 16:00 to honor the innocent victims of genocide.

A renowned expert on Holodomor will join us from Ukraine to discuss the impact of this Soviet crime upon the Ukrainian culture, offering a deeper understanding and perspective on this significant chapter in history. The event will be attended by the Ambassador of Ukraine, Danish dignitaries, representatives of different faith-based organizations and community leaders, united in a service of remembrance. It will be a time to reflect through prayer and dialogue, on the profound lessons of the past and acknowledge the evils of the past to prevent it from happening again in our time. Ukrainian bread, the biggest deficit during Holodomor, as well as Ukrainian wine will be served.

Amidst these reflective gatherings, we host other not-to-be-missed occasions, including engaging Film Fridays featuring cinematic works from Ukraine, spirited discussions on cultural heritage and modern conflict in collaboration with Blue Shield Denmark, meetings of book enthusiasts at the Coffee with Malanchuk Book Club etc.

Decolonizing Mindsets for Security in Ukraine and Europe19.4.2024 07:00:00 CEST | Presseinvitation

Dear Friend of the Ukraine House, In 2024, we still witness the consequences of imperial ambitions and the legacy of colonialism affecting international relations in Europe and threatening European security. The full-scale Russian war of aggression against Ukraine showed the real danger of ignoring the voices of the colonised, repressed and persecuted, and regarding only the former empire as a worthwhile stakeholder in international relations. What would the world have looked like if Russia wasn’t received with impunity after it launched its brutal wars of recolonisation against Ichkeria, Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine? Perhaps currently we would not be facing the largest war in Europe since the Second World War.
