Denmark opens new embassy office in Mykolaiv
Denmark has taken patronage for the reconstruction of Mykolaiv and has launched next step of Denmark’s support for Ukraine. Today at the informal EU Foreign Ministers meeting, the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen announces the opening of a new Danish embassy office in the city of Mykolaiv.
”We must do what it takes to support Ukraine. Early reconstruction is needed now and cannot wait for the war to end. We are opening an embassy office in Mykolaiv to strengthen our presence on the ground and our dialogue with local authorities. The embassy office is a clear example of our close partnership with the city and region of Mykolaiv”, says the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The tasks of the embassy office will include close dialogue with regional and local authorities. Ukrainian needs for reconstruction will be matched with competences and know-how of Danish civil society organisations and businesses within areas like water, energy and waste management.
Background
Before Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Mykolaiv was the home for approx. 500.000 citizens. Russia’s continued attacks have forced citizens to flee. It is estimated that 230.000 citizens remain in Mykolaiv.
The venue of Denmark’s new embassy office has been found and a Danish diplomat leading the office has been appointed. The embassy will soon launch vacancies for local staff. When the embassy is fully operational, the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs will officially open the office.
The embassy office in Mykolaiv works under the instruction of the Royal Danish Embassy in Kyiv. Together, the embassy office and the Royal Danish Embassy in Kyiv constitute Denmark’s diplomatic presence in Ukraine.
