Demant’s climate targets get the green light

Share
[in Danish below] Demant’s emission reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative: The Group commits to reducing aggregate scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% and reducing scope 3 emissions by 46% by 2030 from a 2019 base year and to reaching net-zero emissions across the value chain by 2050.

As a global hearing healthcare and audio technology group, Demant’s responsibility reaches further than its own doorstep. Caring for people’s health and well-being goes hand in hand with caring for the environment. Having set targets for the reduction of scope 1 and 2 emissions (from own facilities) as well as scope 3 emissions (value chain), Demant is on a clear pathway towards reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. Targets that have now been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to be consistent with the intent of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Need for urgent action

The latest climate research from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but the planet is dangerously close to that threshold.

“With our solutions, Demant contributes to creating a sustainable, vibrant and responsible society for generations to come, but we can only do so if we leave as small an environmental footprint as possible and reach net-zero. We are very pleased to have our targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative and will continue our diligent work to meet those targets and do our part to avoid further global temperature rise,” says Søren Nielsen, President & CEO of Demant, and continues:

“While we can certainly move the needle as far as our own direct and indirect emissions are concerned, we cannot do it alone when it comes to the entire value chain. Nations, companies and consumers must all take part in fighting climate change and collaborate on initiatives that can urgently reduce global emissions.”

How Demant will deliver

Demant’s reduction targets pertain to both emissions from Demant’s own facilities and emissions from the entire value chain that accounts for approximately 95% of Demant’s emissions. Across the world-wide Group, the company is taking measures to meet its targets. Among other initiatives Demant, is working to:

  • Reduce emissions from Demant’s vehicles (scope 1) 50% by 2030 by transitioning to electrical vehicles.
  • Eliminate emissions from purchased electricity (scope 2) by transitioning to renewable electricity. Demant aims to cover 50% of its electricity consumption with renewable electricity by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
  • Reduce scope 3 emissions by engaging with suppliers to support their sustainable transition and by working with own product design, sourcing of materials and transportation of goods.

Demant committed to the Science Based Targets initiative in August 2021 and submitted its reduction targets and documentation for validation in November 2022. The validation was received in July 2023.

Behov for hurtig handling
