It was a clearly impressed race director, who during the press center opening ceremony on Tuesday at Bella Center Copenhagen exclaimed a “Mon Dieu, that is a first!”
In front of Christian Prudhomme, Copenhagen’s mayor of culture and leisure Mia Nyegaard, and the rest of the spectators, four local daredevils from the company Industrial Climbing Solutions suddenly took the plunge from the side of one of the AC Hotel Bella Sky’s 76,5-meter-tall towers. The building sports 23 floors and 812 rooms, tilts at a mesmerizing 15 degrees (in comparison the leaning tower of Pisa tilts at just around 4 degrees), and was designed by Danish architects 3XN.
To be repeated on Friday July 1st for Copenhageners and the rest of the world
Dangling from the building the four climbers unfolded large flags in colors matching the four race jerseys, which have also inspired many of decorations enveloping Copenhagen in yellow, green, white, and polka dots these days.
The happening caught the attention of many of the attending journalists with videos and pictures being shared across social media including on the Tour’s own Instagram, which has a following of more than 1,6 million biking fans from around the world.
AC Hotel Bella Sky will repeat the happening during Friday’s time trials around the streets of Copenhagen where the four climbers – who normally tend to cleaning the windows at these impressive heights – will descend from the façade of the hotel tower facing Copenhagen City Centre and the ‘Amager Fælled’ park.
This will take place from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM simultaneously with the initial group of riders taking to the course during the first stage of the Grand Départ Copenhague Danemark.
